Mr. Yakityak’s Grandma’s Sweet and Sour Meatballs
This is such an emotional dish for my husband. He was very close with his grandmother, a lovely lovely woman, and she made these for him often because she knew how much he loved them. The recipe is imbued with the love in their relationship.
Ingredients
- Meatballs:
- 1 lb ground meat
- 1 egg
- Enough water to make the meat very mushy
- 1/4 cup Breadcrumbs or cornflake crumbs
- Salt and pepper
- Ketchup
- Sauce:
- 16 oz. Hunts Tomato Sauce
- 8 oz water
- 8 oz wine
- Pinch of salt
- 2 apples, peeled and grated
- ⅓ cup lemon juice (approximately 1 - 1 ½ lemons)
- ½ cup brown sugar
- Pinch of minced onion
Method
Mix all sauce ingredients together on the stovetop and cook on medium for 15 - 20 minutes in a pot large enough to hold the sauce plus the meatballs.
Mix all the meatball ingredients together.
Dipping your hands in water regularly, form the meatballs and drop them into the heated sauce. Cook on the stovetop for one hour.
You can adjust the flavor by adding a spoonful or two of maple syrup, brown sugar or lemon juice to taste after the meatballs are cooked.
The recipe comes out best if cooked the night before, allowing the flavors to blend as well as allowing you to skim off the fat.
