Grandma’s Good Luck Tzimmes for Two

Meat

I’m not sure why this recipe is appended with “good luck” at the end, given that the handwriting is my grandmother’s. It’s an odd enough phenomenon that I included it in the title. I like that it can be either poultry or beef given that I eat far more of the former, but the latter is more traditional.

Ingredients

  • parts of chicken or one beef short rib
  • 1 bunch of cut up carrots if they’re small, or a half bunch if they are large
  • 3 - 4 large yams, cut up
  • 4 tblsp cinnamon
  • 2 tblsp sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Method

Put the carrots and the parts of chicken in the pot with 2 tblsp of cinnamon, 1 tblsp of sugar, and the pinch of salt. Fill with water to cover same. Cook on the stovetop on medium heat.

When the carrots are soft add the yams and the rest of the cinnamon and sugar, and cook until done. Make sure there’s enough water to ensure it’s a “loose” tzimmes.

You can also put it into the oven if desired.

Make sure to mix the ingredients before serving - the water should have almost dissolved. Be careful not to let the tzimmes burn for lack of water.
